Trulance (Plecanatide) 

Trulance, with the active ingredient Plecanatide, is a prescription medication used to treat certain types of bowel disorders. It is primarily prescribed for chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults. Plecanatide is a guanylate cyclase-C agonist that works by increasing intestinal fluid secretion and transit, facilitating bowel movements.  

Indications

• Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) in adults.
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C) in adults.

Dosage and Administration:

• The recommended dose is 3 mg taken orally once daily, with or without food.
• Tablets should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed.
• For patients unable to swallow tablets, the tablet can be crushed and mixed with water or soft foods.

Contraindications:

• Patients under 6 years of age due to the risk of serious dehydration.
• Patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment or severe hepatic impairment.
• Avoid use in patients 6 years to less than 18 years of age.
• Monitor for signs of excessive diarrhea or dehydration.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

• Diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Nausea
• Headache
• Increased gas
• Dizziness

Overdose:

• Overdose may lead to severe diarrhea and potential dehydration.
• In case of overdose, contact poison control or seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Storage:

• Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
• Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children.

Additional Information:

• Not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women unless deemed necessary by a healthcare provider.
• Patients should be advised to maintain adequate hydration while taking Trulance.
